Weekend Storms Can Make Hidden Damage Show Up

Weekend storms do not always look like a major claim at first. A homeowner may notice a new ceiling stain after heavy rain, a drip near a window, damp drywall, shingles in the yard, a limb against the roof, or a room that suddenly smells wet.

Sometimes that is a simple repair. Sometimes it is the first sign of more damage behind the surface. The important part is figuring that out early, before the wrong repair plan or a quick insurance estimate sets the tone.

Short summary

The National Weather Service office in Peachtree City reported scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms for north and central Georgia tonight, with the possibility of strong to severe storms, locally damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall. The outlook also calls for scattered to numerous thunderstorms Sunday through Friday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

The Weather Prediction Center also described a front producing showers and thunderstorms from Texas to the Northeast, with heavy rain capable of causing localized flash flooding in vulnerable areas. By Monday, the excessive-rainfall risk area expands into parts of the Tennessee Valley, Lower Mississippi Valley, and Southeast.

What homeowners should look for after the rain

After a round of heavy rain, wind, or lightning, do a calm walk-through of the areas where damage usually shows up first:

Those clues do not automatically mean a claim should be filed. They do mean the damage should be inspected carefully enough to understand what happened, what may be hidden, and whether the policy may apply.

The claim lesson

The best time to review damage is before the claim is already boxed into a low estimate or a narrow explanation. If a roof leak, interior stain, fallen limb, or storm-related issue is claim-worthy, the cause and the damage need to be explained clearly from the start.

That does not mean every mark on a home is covered. It means the decision should be based on the damage, the likely cause, the policy language, and the repairs that may actually be needed, not guesswork.

Covenant perspective

Covenant Claim Group can inspect what you are seeing, review visible and hidden damage, look at causation, explain how the policy may apply, and help determine whether a claim is appropriate. If a claim does make sense, starting with a clear inspection can help avoid preventable confusion later.
