Storms Keep Coming: Check the Outside Before Water Gets Inside

North and central Georgia are still in a stormy stretch. NWS Atlanta’s Hazardous Weather Outlook issued Thursday morning says isolated to scattered storms are possible today and tonight, with locally heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds. It also calls for scattered to numerous storms Friday through Tuesday, with locally heavy rainfall as the main concern and a few storms possibly becoming strong to severe.

That does not mean every home has an insurance claim. It does mean homeowners should take a calm look around the property after heavy rain or gusty wind, especially when storms keep repeating over several days.

Start outside

Some of the first clues show up outside before the water stain appears inside. After the weather clears, check the areas that usually take the beating first.

Then check inside

Inside, look for small changes that were not there before the storms: a new ceiling stain, damp trim, attic drips, musty smells, soft flooring, bubbling paint, or staining around windows and doors.

Those signs may be a simple maintenance issue. They also may point to storm-related water intrusion, roof damage, gutter overflow, flashing problems, or hidden moisture that needs a closer look.

Before you file, document what changed

If something looks claim-worthy, take photos before cleanup or repairs change the scene. Use wide photos to show the area and close-up photos to show the damage. Save receipts for temporary repairs, keep notes about when you first noticed the issue, and avoid permanent repairs before the damage can be inspected.

Georgia’s insurance claim tips also remind homeowners to protect the property from further damage, keep receipts for temporary repairs, maintain damaged property for inspection when possible, and take photos or video before temporary repairs.

Covenant perspective

Covenant Claim Group helps Georgia homeowners inspect visible and hidden damage, review likely cause, and look at how the policy may apply before deciding whether a claim makes sense. Sometimes the right answer is a simple repair. Sometimes the damage is claim-worthy and needs to be documented clearly from the beginning.
