Granules in the Gutters? Check the Roof Before You Assume It Is Fine

Granules in the Gutters? Check the Roof Before You Assume It Is Fine
Granules in a gutter or at the bottom of a downspout can be easy to miss.
You may see dark grit on a splash block, little piles near a downspout elbow, or sand-like material in the gutter when leaves are cleaned out. Sometimes it is normal aging. Sometimes it shows up after hard rain, wind, branches rubbing the roof, or a repair that did not answer the real question.
The mistake is treating it like trash before anyone looks at the roof.
Georgia homeowners do not need to assume granule loss means a roof claim should be filed. Older shingles shed some granules over time. A small amount after cleaning can be routine. If the roof is near the end of its normal life, the issue may be maintenance instead of covered damage.
But the pattern still matters.
Take a few photos before the gutters are rinsed clean. Get one wide photo of the downspout or gutter area, one closer photo of the granules, and one photo that shows the roof slope or gutter line if it can be done safely from the ground.
Look for context. Are the granules coming from one side of the home or every slope? Did the pile appear after a recent storm, limb contact, roof work, or a gutter cleaning? Are there missing shingles, lifted shingles, exposed mat, damaged flashing, or dark patches that look different from the rest of the roof?
Save repair and cleaning notes. If a gutter cleaner, roofer, handyman, or contractor mentions wear, wind, hail, age, brittle shingles, or a small repair, keep that message or invoice. Those details can help separate maintenance from something that deserves a closer look.
Do not climb the roof just to check it yourself. A ground-level photo and a simple inspection are usually the better first step.
Covenant Claim Group can inspect the visible concern, review photos, and help Georgia homeowners understand whether the issue looks routine, maintenance-related, below-deductible, or worth documenting more carefully before deciding what to do next.
No pressure to file if the facts do not support it. If you are seeing granules in gutters or near a downspout and want peace of mind before repairs, cleaning, or a claim decision, schedule an inspection with Covenant Claim Group.
