After Hot Stormy Weather, Check the Gutters

Holiday-week weather in Georgia can make it easy to miss a small problem.

The National Weather Service Atlanta/Peachtree City Hazardous Weather Outlook issued Friday morning, July 3, reported a Heat Advisory through Saturday and isolated to scattered afternoon and early evening storms across north Georgia. Several storms may become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and frequent lightning possible.

That forecast does not mean every home will have damage. It does mean a homeowner should slow down after the weather clears and look for changes before the weekend turns into cleanup, travel, or quick repairs.

Start with the gutters and roof edges.

Gutters can show problems early because they collect leaves, small limbs, roof granules, overflow marks, loose hangers, and impact dents. A gutter that was already clogged can also send stormwater into fascia, soffits, window trim, siding, or the edge of the roof.

After it is safe outside, walk the home from the ground and look for a few simple things:

New sagging, pulling, or gaps along the gutter line.

Fresh leaves, twigs, or shingle granules gathered near a downspout.

Water marks on fascia, soffit, siding, or trim below the gutter.

A new drip, bubble, stain, or soft spot inside near an exterior wall or ceiling edge.

Anything that was cleaned up or repaired before photos were taken.

Do not climb on a hot roof or work near lightning. Photos from the yard, porch, or a safe window are enough to start. Take one wide photo that shows the area of the house, then a closer photo of the concern. Save the date, repair notes, and any insurance explanation you receive.

Not every gutter or roof-edge issue needs a claim. Some are maintenance. Some are below the deductible. Some are small repairs.

But guessing is not the same as knowing. Filing too soon can create a claim that does not make sense. Repairing too fast can remove the details that explain what changed.

Covenant Claim Group can inspect the visible concern, review photos and repair information, and help you understand whether it looks like routine maintenance or something worth documenting before you file, repair, or accept an insurance answer.

If today’s heat and storms leave you wondering about gutters, roof edges, soffits, window trim, or a new ceiling spot, get a second set of eyes.
