Before Cleanup Starts, Save the Proof

When property damage shows up, most homeowners want the mess cleaned up fast. That makes sense. A wet floor, damaged shingles, broken trim, smoke odor, or storm debris is stressful, and stopping more damage matters.

But before damaged materials are removed or permanent repairs begin, take a few minutes to document what changed.

Why photos matter before cleanup

After cleanup starts, the damage can look different. Wet drywall gets cut out. Flooring gets removed. Shingles, gutters, trim, cabinets, insulation, or contents may be moved or thrown away. That can make it harder to understand what was damaged, where the damage started, and whether the damage may be claim-worthy.

The Georgia insurance department advises homeowners to keep damaged property available for inspection when possible and to photograph or video the damage before temporary repairs. It also warns against making permanent repairs before the damage is inspected.

What to save

If it is safe to do so, save simple proof before materials disappear.

Temporary repairs are different from permanent repairs

Homeowners usually need to protect the property from more damage. That may mean stopping a leak, placing a tarp, drying wet areas, boarding an opening, or moving items out of harm’s way.

That is different from replacing materials before anyone has inspected them. If permanent repairs happen too quickly, the insurer may not be able to see the original damage, and the homeowner may be left trying to explain what used to be there.

Some damage is simple. Some damage needs a closer look.

A small stain, loose shingle, wet baseboard, cracked siding, or fallen limb may be minor maintenance. It also may point to hidden damage, storm-related damage, water intrusion, or a larger repair issue. The safest early move is to document what you see and get the cause reviewed before deciding whether a claim makes sense.

Covenant perspective

Covenant Claim Group helps Georgia homeowners inspect what changed, review visible and hidden damage, understand likely cause, and look at how the policy may apply. That early review can help a homeowner decide whether the damage is claim-worthy, whether repairs should stay out of insurance, or what support is needed before filing.
