Heavy Rain Today: Check Where Water Collects Before It Gets Inside

NWS Atlanta’s Hazardous Weather Outlook issued Saturday morning says scattered thunderstorms are expected across north and central Georgia today, with a few storms possibly becoming strong. The main threat is locally heavy rainfall that could produce flash flooding, along with frequent lightning and gusty winds.

For homeowners, that means the first damage clues may show up where water collects: near gutters, roof edges, downspouts, garage doors, crawlspace openings, basement entries, window wells, and low spots near the foundation. A small puddle or stain may be simple cleanup. It may also point to water intrusion, roof-edge overflow, backed-up drainage, or hidden moisture that should be checked before repairs change the scene.

Start outside while the evidence is fresh

When the rain lets up and it is safe to look around, start with the places that handle the most water. Take wide photos first so the location is clear, then close photos of any damage or staining.

Then check the inside edge

Inside, look near the areas that line up with the exterior water path: ceiling corners, attic areas, window trim, baseboards, garage walls, crawlspace access, flooring near exterior doors, and rooms below roof valleys.

New dampness, a musty smell, soft flooring, bubbling paint, fresh ceiling stains, or trim that suddenly looks swollen can be early signs. Do not assume it is claim-worthy, but do not cover it up before someone checks the likely cause.

Document before cleanup gets too far

Georgia’s insurance claim tips tell homeowners to protect the property from further damage, keep receipts for temporary repairs, and document damage with photos or video before temporary repairs are made when possible. That matters after heavy rain because water moves quickly and cleanup can erase the clues that explain where it came from.

If you have to move water, place a tarp, clear a drain, or make a temporary repair, take photos first if it is safe. Save receipts. Keep notes about when the rain happened and when you first noticed the problem.

Covenant perspective

Covenant Claim Group helps Georgia homeowners inspect visible and hidden damage, review likely cause, and look at how the policy may apply before deciding whether a claim is the right move. Some heavy-rain issues are simple drainage or maintenance problems. Some are claim-worthy because the damage is sudden, physical, and tied to a covered event. The point is to find out before the evidence gets cleaned up or the first estimate looks only at the obvious spot.
